TOKYO NOTEBOOK · OSHIAGE

Oshiage in a day: the riverside, Solamachi and Tokyo Skytree

Join Gai Xiaomi for a riverside walk, food and shops at Solamachi, then city views from Tokyo Skytree. Three main stops and two optional paid extensions connect outdoor time, indoor sights, dining and accommodation.

01STOP 1

Kitajukken River: take time to look up at Skytree

45–75 min
Daytime in comfortable weatherDirections ↗

Kitajukken River and Tokyo Mizumachi

Skytree deserves a view from a distance as well as from above. The western Kitajukken River path brings the tower, bridges and water together beside the low-rise shops of Tokyo Mizumachi. Start near Genmori Bridge, then follow the accessible riverside path and stop where you will not block pedestrians.

This is a narrow urban canal, distinct from the broad Sumida River. Reflections depend on wind, light and the water. Allow 45–75 minutes in comfortable weather, or shorten the walk in rain or strong heat.

Choose LAND_A for a meal or MŪYA for coffee and bread. Each has its own prices, queues and service times. One break is enough before heading east to Skytree Town.

02STOP 2

Tokyo Solamachi: eat first, then choose your shops

45–90 min
Lunch to afternoon; queues are extraDirections ↗

Tokyo Solamachi

Solamachi gathers gifts, everyday shops and restaurants beneath Skytree, with useful indoor time on rainy days. Ordinary shopping areas do not require a tower ticket. Tower admission, the aquarium and other paid facilities are separate.

Identify the WEST, TOWER and EAST zones before choosing a few shops. Allow 45–90 minutes for shopping. Rokurinsha is on EAST 6F; Qu’il fait bon is on EAST 2F. You do not need a full meal and a large dessert at every stop, and queues need extra time.

The aquarium on the western 5F and 6F is an optional extension. Book tower entry before planning a sunset visit; sunset varies by season, so 16:00 does not always mean sunset.

2-1A nearby stop

Sumida Aquarium: slow down for jellyfish and underwater scenes

90–120 min
Rainy days or afternoon; entry ends one hour before closingDirections ↗

Sumida Aquarium

For a change of pace, extend the mall visit to Sumida Aquarium. Jellyfish, penguins and varied tank lighting reward slow observation. Families, aquarium photography enthusiasts and visitors seeking a rainy-day alternative to shopping can allow 90–120 minutes.

This indoor aquarium charges separately from the tower. Adult admission became ¥2,700 in February 2026. Check opening times and tickets before combining it with a tower visit. Last admission is one hour before closing.

Exhibits and activities change; historical photographs do not promise every animal will be on display. Skip this stop if city views are your priority. Visiting both paid facilities requires extra time.

03STOP 3

Tokyo Skytree: read the city from 350 metres

60–90 min
Your booked slot; check sunset separatelyDirections ↗

Tokyo Skytree Tembo Deck

At the 350-metre Tembo Deck, rivers, railways and dense neighbourhoods reveal how Tokyo fits together. Explore the windows and connecting deck floors at an easy pace, allowing 60–90 minutes including lifts.

Prices vary by date. Online adult deck tickets start at ¥1,800; the 350+450-metre combination starts at ¥3,000. Tickets issued at the 4F counter or vending machines carry an additional ¥500 issuance fee per ticket. An online starting price is not the total walk-up price for every date.

Cloud, rain and strong wind can affect views or operations; even a clear day does not guarantee Mount Fuji. Glass reflections affect night photography. For a meal or dessert afterwards, Ginza Grill Cardinal and CHEESE GARDEN are in Solamachi, outside the paid observation decks.

3-1A nearby stop

Tembo Galleria: one more walk through the sky

30–45 min
Optional extension during the same deck visitDirections ↗

Tokyo Skytree Tembo Galleria

Treat the Galleria as an addition to the same tower visit. Its gently rising glass corridor near 450 metres provides a higher perspective. Height and architecture enthusiasts can allow another 30–45 minutes; visitors who dislike heights or want a single panoramic view can stay with the deck.

You cannot enter it directly from the ground. Hold a deck ticket and buy a combination, or add Galleria admission at the 350m ticket machines. Adult additions currently cost ¥1,400 and child additions ¥700, without the 4F ¥500 issuance fee. Capacity may stop sales.

More height does not guarantee clearer views: cloud and reflections still matter. Choose this extension for your interest, rather than feeling obliged to buy the highest level.
