TOKYO NOTEBOOK · AZABU JUBAN

A day in Azabu Juban: old-shop flavours, local streets and Motoazabu temples

Follow Gai Xiaomi from Juban Inari beside the station through long-established shops to Zenpukuji’s ginkgo and Motoazabu’s slopes. Three main stops and two optional details keep this a flexible walk, with dining choices rather than a compulsory shop collection.

About 4–6 hours; dinner can be added separatelyGai Xiaomi
01STOP 1

Juban Inari Shrine: the neighbourhood’s stories beside the station

15–25 min
Daytime; visit before 17:00 for the amulet officeDirections ↗

Near Juban Inari Shrine

Start here for a small neighbourhood shrine rather than a major temple complex. It is beside Oedo Line Exit 7; check the changes in level before looking at its torii, treasure boat and frog figures.

The frogs refer to the local Gamaike, or frog-pond, legend of protection from fire. Read this as community memory and belief, not a verified miraculous effect. The present shrine was rebuilt after subway construction, linking local worship to modern transport.

Gai Xiaomi suggests 15–25 minutes before walking into the shopping street. The amulet office lists 9:00–17:00 and currently supplies prewritten paper goshuin. Office hours do not define every entrance or prayer service. Ask about access if travelling with a stroller or someone with limited mobility: near an exit does not mean step-free.

Sarashina Horii’s Azabu main store offers white soba for lunch. Naniwaya Sohonten is a separate walk, with upstairs cafe service distinct from ground-floor takeaway taiyaki. These are choices, not two compulsory courses.

Azabu Juban Shopping Street: old shops in a living neighbourhood

60–90 min
Late morning to afternoon; check target shopsDirections ↗

Near the central shopping street, not one shop entrance

The attraction is the close mix of long-established shops and present-day life, rather than a large department store. Soba, taiyaki, bean snacks and everyday stores sit among cafes, restaurants and residential entrances. Embassy neighbours and residents from different backgrounds keep the Edo-era commercial memory part of a living district.

Choose two or three shops you actually want. At Mamegen’s main store, compare bean-snack flavours and textures, checking packaging, expiry and allergens for gifts. Many famous shops do not require a purchase from every one. Observe shopfronts and the adjoining slopes without blocking doors.

Patio Juban is a small optional plaza within the street, not another major destination. Opening hours vary by business and the route is not a fully covered indoor mall. In rain, shorten the exposed sections and spend longer at a seated cafe.

For something savoury later, Abechan offers grilled skewers and nikomi, a stewed-offal dish. Treat it as an izakaya pause rather than a guaranteed lunch service. Ueshima Coffee’s Azabu branch offers a straightforward seated break. Eat where the shop permits and carry away packaging so residents can continue using their street.

Patio Juban: a small pause within the shopping street

10–15 min
A daytime optional pause; skip in crowds or rainDirections ↗

Near Patio Juban plaza

This small plaza breaks up the continuous shopfronts and lets you see where streets meet. It is around Azabu Juban 2-chome, quite different in scale from Shiba Park: do not expect lawns or playground facilities.

Look at the Kimichan girl statue and surrounding streets for 10–15 minutes. Local accounts connect the statue with the Akai Kutsu, or Red Shoes, story. The interest is how a community preserves a story, rather than treating every literary or biographical legend as settled fact. Seating, events and maintenance vary, and an empty seat is not promised.

Gai Xiaomi keeps this within the shopping-street stop. Skip it in crowds or rain and continue to a shop. Ask where food may be eaten rather than assuming the plaza is a picnic area.

03STOP 3

Azabusan Zenpukuji: a temple pause beneath an old ginkgo

30–45 min
Daytime, allowing time before the reported 17:00 gate closureDirections ↗

Near Zenpukuji, not a grave entrance

A short walk from the shops changes the scale to an active temple at 1-6-21 Motoazabu. The hall, old ginkgo and historical monuments reward attention beyond an exterior photo.

The temple records its role as the first US legation in 1859, connecting Azabu to Japan’s modern foreign relations. The Sakasa Icho, or upside-down ginkgo, has both a local legend and ancient-tree significance; the name does not mean it literally grows upside down. Observe its trunk and branches without crossing barriers. Autumn colour depends on weather, not a promised calendar date.

Allow 30–45 minutes on permitted paths. Distinguish worship spaces from graves. Fukuzawa Yukichi’s grave is part of the temple’s history, but burial areas are not unrestricted shortcuts. Avoid close photographs of other people’s gravestones and give mourners space. Ordinary grounds access does not promise entry to the hall, treasures or kindergarten.

For extra walking, choose Motoazabu’s Hikawa Shrine with additional uphill time. If tired, return for OSLO Coffee. Murata’s rice pots are an optional separately booked dinner with course and party-size restrictions, not a cheap weekday lunch inserted to fill the route.

Azabu Hikawa Shrine: an optional uphill change of pace

15–25 min
Daytime; before 16:00 for office servicesDirections ↗

Near Hikawa Shrine in Motoazabu

Choose this extra walk if you want to experience Motoazabu’s slopes. Public lanes from Zenpukuji change the view from shops to residential streets and a shrine; the change in level can be part of the interest without collecting more sights.

Navigate to Azabu Hikawa Shrine, 1-4-23 Motoazabu, not Akasaka Hikawa or another Tokyo shrine with the same name. Follow open paths for a 15–25-minute visit. The amulet office lists 9:00–16:00 and prayer reception until 15:30; these are not a complete grounds gate schedule.

Skip this child stop if it is late, wet or the uphill walk is unsuitable. Return towards the station for a break. Give worshippers and residents room; ask about stroller, wheelchair and stair access rather than assuming a nearby map pin means a level walk.
