A little more Tokyo is on its way.

Roppongi in a day: glass architecture, gardens and Tokyo views

Walk with Gai Xiaomi from NACT’s glass curves through Midtown and Hinokicho Park to Hills and Mohri Garden. Add the indoor observatory if views appeal. Choose one exhibition, one lunch and one break for an unhurried city day.

About 5–7 hours; extra time for exhibitions or evening viewsGai Xiaomi

The National Art Center, Tokyo: begin with light and architecture

45–60 min
After 10:00; choose another day than TuesdayDirections ↗

NACT building location; follow exit signs

Even without an exhibition ticket, the wavelike glass wall brings trees and sky into the lobby, while the conical entrance gives the building a recognisable character. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa with Nihon Sekkei, it rewards a slower architectural start rather than a rush to famous works.

There is no permanent collection. Entry to public building areas is free, while individual exhibitions have their own tickets. Allow an editorial 45–60 minutes for architecture and the shop, adding about 60–90 minutes and queues for a selected exhibition. Free building admission does not make all galleries free.

Nogizaka Exit 6 connects directly with an officially documented lift and wheelchair route. Inside are lifts and multipurpose toilets on each floor. Strollers are allowed, subject to crowd-related restrictions. This gives a concrete arrival option rather than simply saying it is near Roppongi Station.

Ippudo on Roppongi 4-chome offers a lunch option; upstairs ROND is an alternative architectural pause without an exhibition ticket. Choose the break you want and leave time for the greenery ahead.

Tokyo Midtown: design, lunch and greenery together

60–90 min
After 11:00 for shops and lunchDirections ↗

Tokyo Midtown Galleria building location

Tokyo Midtown lets you change pace within one area: browse design and everyday goods, step outside to the gardens, and choose lunch. This is the Roppongi complex at 9-7-1 Akasaka, distinct from Hibiya and Yaesu.

Start in Galleria and continue towards Midtown Garden and Hinokicho Park. Shopping is optional; the interest is how indoor and outdoor spaces meet. For Japanese craft and older art, the Suntory Museum of Art on Galleria 3F is an alternative exhibition choice with a separate ticket and changeover closures. After a long morning exhibition, keep the afternoon for greenery instead.

Oedo Line Roppongi Exit 8 connects directly. The Hibiya underground connection contains stairs, and the operator recommends arrival by Oedo for wheelchair and stroller users. Two direct connections do not mean identical step-free access.

Most shops close at 14:00 on 20 November 2026; the complex temporarily closes 21–23 November for disaster-response work, including some underground and surface passages. Do not plan ordinary shopping, Suju lunch or Midtown coffee on those dates. Use public streets onward; the notice does not establish closure of the entire municipal park.

Hinokicho Park: a pond walk beside the towers

25–40 min
Daytime on dry groundDirections ↗

Hinokicho pond area, not the only entrance

A few steps from shopping, this municipal park brings your attention back to water and trees. East of Midtown, it occupies the former Azabu lower-residence garden site of the Hagi-domain Mori family, with pond-side walks and lawn rather than a hotel garden requiring a purchase.

Follow permitted paths and notice tower and tree reflections together. Hinokicho adjoins Midtown Garden but has separate management. Allow 25–40 minutes within the Midtown stop rather than adding the same time twice.

Maintenance can affect lawns, play equipment and water-side access. A pond is not permission to swim or play in the water. Blossom and autumn colour depend on conditions; older images are not today’s report. In rain or on slippery ground, shorten the pond walk and choose a seated break.

Roppongi Hills: read the city through its changing levels

60–90 min
Afternoon to evening with flexibility for viewsDirections ↗

Near Mori Tower, not a ticket entrance

Hills is more than one photograph of Mori Tower. Plazas, shops, Mohri Garden and Keyakizaka occupy changing levels, showing how shopping, art and everyday life meet. It is a separate complex from Tokyo Midtown, reached across public streets rather than by changing floors.

Orient yourself around Mori Tower and Hillside, then choose a garden or short Keyakizaka walk. Tokyo Tower lies beyond the complex. Photograph from safe pavements without stepping into traffic for a centred view.

For a higher view add 52F Tokyo City View. The 53F Mori Art Museum is a separate facility with separate ticketing. It is closed for changeover 24 September–30 October 2026, with the next exhibition beginning 31 October; ordinary opening hours do not permit entry during that closure. Open plazas do not mean all shops and museums are open.

After a Midtown lunch, AFURI is an alternative meal rather than another compulsory course; HARBS can provide an afternoon sweet break. Gai Xiaomi suggests choosing the section you most enjoy before deciding to go upstairs.

Mohri Garden: water and trees beneath Mori Tower

15–25 min
Daytime reflections or changing evening lightDirections ↗

Mohri Garden pond area

The appeal is a pond-scale garden beneath the towers: about 4,300 square metres between Mori Tower and TV Asahi, with water, stones and seasonal trees. It provides a brief change from Hills crowds without another major paid park.

The site has an Edo-period daimyo-garden history, but the present Mohri Garden was newly arranged when Hills opened in 2003. Some archaeological remains were preserved beneath soil rather than displayed as a completely intact Edo landscape. Allow 15–25 minutes on open paths to observe old and new scales together.

Ordinary entry is free; Tokyo’s official tourism listing gives 7:00–23:00. Blossoms, autumn leaves and winter decorative lighting have their own seasons. Do not expect identical decorations every night. Include the pause within Hills, or skip it for an indoor break in rain or closures.

Tokyo City View: read Tokyo through the windows

45–60 min
Plan around sunset, allowing time before last entryDirections ↗

Mori Tower location; enter at 3F ticket lobby

This indoor 52F observatory frames Tokyo Tower, the bay and surrounding buildings from 250 metres above sea level. It is not an open rooftop; Sky Deck’s general public operation has ended.

Allow an editorial 45–60 minutes, longer to wait for evening lights. Glass reflections and weather affect views; Mt Fuji is not guaranteed. Darker clothing and angles away from indoor lights may help photographs.

The observatory, 52F Mori Arts Center Gallery and 53F Mori Art Museum have separate ticketing. In 2026, Sky Gallery 3 towards Shinjuku/Shibuya closes 13–16 October; central Sky Gallery 2 towards Mt Fuji closes 28–30 October and 4–9 November. The observatory closes 27 October and 10–12 November, so choose another evening plan on those dates.
