2026 Albert Marquet Exhibition

Make time in West Shinjuku for rivers, harbors and gray light. A quiet exhibition for lovers of landscape painting.

2026.09.22 — 12.13

Why pause here?

Marquet often painted waterside scenes: rivers, harbors, boats and small, easily overlooked figures in cities. This is his first Japanese retrospective in 35 years. Beyond that milestone, the appeal is seeing how the same landscape changes with light and weather.

Gai Xiaomi suggests choosing one waterscape, looking first at distance and blocks of color, then moving closer for details. Even without art-history knowledge, you can begin with a landscape you enjoy.

Check the two display periods first

Drawings rotate between two periods: the first ends November 1; the second begins November 3. If you want to see a particular work, check the official list rather than assuming every listed work is visible every day.

Plan a comfortable visit

Allow an editorial estimate of 60–90 minutes plus queues. It fits near a West Exit architecture walk. If you have several districts planned, choose a few priority works and save energy for later.

Before you go

Some works may be photographed; follow signs. Photography permission does not automatically permit selfies with works.

For Friday evenings, still arrive before last entry.
